• 25 Most Dangerous Places To Visit As A Tourist

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. • Driving through the Republic of Congo

After finally receiving my scooter in Franceville, Gabon I made the trip towards the Congo. But again, it wasn't without any lack of drama. I had two flat tires before I even made it to the border. I was planning on hitting the sand road of the Congo by about 8am, but with the flats, and the fact I was in the middle of nowhere, I didn't hit the sand until about 1030. The sand road in the Congo was absolutely grueling. There were so many times driving the road towards Oyo that I just about quit and set up at the side of the road to sleep for the night. Following the sand day I crashed at the house of a Lebanese expat for the night and pushed on to Brazzaville. Two days later, and I arrive at the outskirts of Brazzaville, Congo. But my visa expires today, so what will I do? Stay tuned....

http://www.go2africa.com/tour/2867/at-a-glance/explore-congo We heard that the jungle is not for ninnies, so we went into the green heart of Central Africa’s vast rainforest to find out for ourselves. Conditions are similar to Africa’s more famous tropical trekking destinations, like Uganda and Rwanda. Trekking anywhere is for rugged travellers - the heat, the insects and the terrain all test your commitment to adventure, but the rewards are exceptional, which is why a jungle trek belongs on your do-before-I-die travel list. What should you expect on a Congo jungle trek? To be delighted, frustrated, surprised and awed (sometimes all at the same time!). The Congo contains some of the most fascinating natural wildlife habitats in Africa. This fascinating country is home to a remarkable creature, the Mountain Gorilla. Our destination is the Virunga National Park that extends along the borders of the Congo, Uganda and Ruanda. Close to the border with Uganda is the village of Goma that contains several dwellings and a good market that displays an amazing variety of exotic fruit. After a short but very welcome break the journey continues in a four-wheel drive minibus but this does not last very long as it soon becomes necessary to travel by foot, a daunting prospect but also one inspired by the possibility of spotting the rare Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat on a journey that will take around two days. The excitement continues to mount as a tree, or even a bush, could suddenly reveal one of the region’s remarkable Mountain Gorillas. Suddenly from behind a bush the first one appears! Unlike their reputation of old, these mighty creatures are far from aggressive and Man originally thought of these animals as highly dangerous and unpredictable. However recent studies have proven that this is untrue and that the gorilla is an exceptionally peace loving creature. Even today the precise size of the gorilla population is not known. However, it is believed that around three hundred and eighty Mountain Gorillas inhabit the protected region of the Virunga Mountains. Various sounds such as screaming, whimpering, barking and grunting play an important if not vital role in the daily communication of the gorilla as the various members of a group may not see each other for much of the time. By communicating in this way they learn of the mood and current whereabouts of the other members of the group. On average an adult utters around eight sounds an hour. Due to constant supervision and strict policing these fascinating creatures that were until quite recently threatened with extinction, have managed to survive to the present day. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, also known as the DRC, Congo-Kinshasa, DROC or just Congo is my second country of origin; it is the country where my mother has her roots, as well as my father. It is a country located in central Africa and the continent's second largest country after Algeria. With its 75 million people, the DRC is the most populous French speaking country in the world and it is the world's 11th largest country. From 1971 to 1997 it was named Zaïre by the former president Mobutu who also changed the names of country's cities, which had Belgian names to African names. It borders the Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville or the Congo,(which by the way is my primary country of origin, because my father's primary roots are there), the Central African Republic, and South Sudan to the north, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the East, Zambia and Angola to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The Congolese Civil Wars, which began in 1996, brought about the end of Mobutu Sese Seko's 31-year reign and devastated the country. The wars ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups, and resulted in the deaths of 6 million people. The DRC is extremely rich in natural resources, worth at least US$ 24 trillion, but political instability, a lack of infrastructure, deep rooted corruption, centuries of both commercial and colonial extraction and exploitation have limited holistic development. WFP provides food for survivors of sexual violence who are recovering in Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Rape is widespread in DRC, particularly in the war-torn east of the country. WFP is also working to reduce the risk of sexual violence against women with a project for the manufacture of fuel briquettes in Goma. It means that women living in camps don't have to go out looking for firewood in the bush where they are liable to be attacked.
